On the southwest edge of Battery Park near Pier A stands a dramatic monument that even the locals can't always identify. It's the American Merchant Mariners' Memorial, depicting stranded sailors from the SS Muskogee in 1942 after a German U-boat sank their oil tanker bound for England. All 34 crewmen were lost.
