      The Subways

18.08.05 Silvercup-2.jpg
  • A reliable subway system is vital to the future of New York. Nicole Gelinas of the Manhattan Institute says reconstruction of the subways in the '80s rebuild helped the city expand employment in outer-borough neighborhoods where joblessness had been endemic. Booming tourism in Manhattan simultaneously led to rising employment in other parts of the city. But today -- as the system fails and ridership falls -- a crucial driver of New York economic success is in danger.

    GENTRIFICATION

  • Is gentrification all bad? No, writes New York Magazine critic Justin Davidson, it can be a toxin or a balm.

  • We shouldn't try to stop gentrification, says Adam Millsap in Forbes, but we could make it less painful.
